One of the most common misconceptions in storytelling is that fear and weakness are the same thing.

They aren’t.

In fact, some of the strongest characters are terrified.

They’re afraid of failure.

Afraid of loss.

Afraid of making the wrong choice.

Afraid of becoming the very thing they’re fighting against.

Fear doesn’t make a character weak.

What they do despite that fear is what defines them.

The characters that stay with readers aren’t fearless.

They’re the ones who keep moving even when fear is sitting beside them every step of the way.

That’s what courage really is.

Not the absence of fear.

The decision to act anyway.

I think that’s why readers connect so deeply with vulnerable characters.

Fear feels human.

Fear feels familiar.

We’ve all stood at the edge of something uncertain.

We’ve all wondered if we’re strong enough.

The characters we remember aren’t the ones who never doubted themselves.

They’re the ones who faced those doubts and kept going.

Not because they knew they would succeed.

Because they believed the risk was worth taking.
